There are two types of winches for slipways: the single drum winch and the traction winch (double drum). The single drum winch provides simplicity and reliability for pulling small to medium-sized vessels. The traction winch offers high traction capacity for heavy load applications. The winch uses the friction between the cable and the drums to generate tension. In this case, a cable storage winch is also necessary to store the cable coming from the traction winch. In shipyards, winches equipped with multiple sheaves can pull vessels with displacements over 6,000 tons.
